The Red Deer Central Lions Speed Skating Club is a community sports club serving Red Deer and surrounding area. The Central Lions Club has sponsored our club for over 65 years (since 1953 as our Title Sponsor). In 2019, the Central Lions were honoured with the Speed Skating Canada Sport Champion Award as Partner of the Year Award. We are grateful for their continued support of our Club and our events as our Official Timers!

The Red Deer Central Lions Speed Skating Club has several programs, for recreational skaters to high performance skaters, from beginner to Special Olympics to world class levels! Our Club trains in both Short Track and Long Track.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame has information  on Red Deer Speed Skating Alumni including Jeremy Wotherspoon, Kevin Sirois, and Mike Reitmeier.

Long Track Speed Skating

Setters Place Oval, Great Chief Park, Red Deer

From mid-December to late-February (weather permitting), our Club moves outside to the 400m Oval at Setters Place, a legacy of the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Skaters improve their endurance, cardiovascular fitness, and long track technique while skating on the Oval for both Olympic Style and Mass Start racing.

Short Track Speed Skating

Kinex Arena, Red Deer

From late-September to late-March (with a break for Long Track at the Oval), our Club skates inside at the Kinex Arena for Short Track. Short Track is a fast-paced sport on a hockey rink (with mats set up along the boards for protection). Skaters learn technique and strategy through drills and games while improving their endurance and cardiovascular fitness through longer distance and sprint distance practices.

No matter what speed or ability, there is always a group for you!
